Envisioning a brighter future for rural communities.
When it was announced that Glentrool Primary School was due to close, the Glentrool & Bargrennan Community Trust sought to reimagine the future of the building for the benefit of residents and visitors alike.
In 2019, the GBCT embarked upon their principal capital project, the Glentrool Hive. Formally the village primary school, GBCT had managed the building since 2010 through entering a lease agreement with Dumfries and Galloway Council.
Extensive public consultations and feasibility studies demonstrated a demand within the local area for a permanent and aspirational direction for the development and use of the building. A community asset transfer of the building was established, and funds were raised to transform the aged building into a multipurpose activity and community centre.
Renovations were completed in 2022 and the building, carefully designed to be flexible in its prospective amenities, opened with a gallery and shop space, self-catering accommodation and a hall available for hire. All of which would contribute to the sustainable income stream required to support the year-round community led projects provided by the GBCT.
Now after three years in operation, the Glentrool Hive has established itself as an inspirational example of community vision and regeneration in Dumfries and Galloway. The project has exceeded expectations in functionality, evolving with the social and economic demands of the area, developing as a community resource hub, tourism facility and emerging as a D&G Council Silver status emergency resilience centre.
The GBCT is dedicated to improving the social and economic growth of our community through the management and development of our community owned and principal asset, the Glentrool Hive and in conjunction with the three community owned houses.
We regularly host community events, free to residents including coffee mornings, lunches, quiz and music nights. These create and improve the network of relationships among residents and friends to the village. Trustees and a range of volunteers have enabled meaningful connections to be fostered and offer individuals in the immediate and wider community a wide range of support. This is inevitably connected to the sustainability of the Glentrool Hive.
